There is / There are は、「〜がある」「〜がいる」と、場所に存在する人や物を説明するときに使う表現です。単数なら There is、複数なら There are を使い分けます。

🟨 There is / There are は、場所に「何があるか・誰がいるか」を伝える表現です。
There is / There are の基本
基本の語順は、There is(are) ＋ 人・物 ＋ 場所 です。ここでの there は、通常「そこに」と訳しません。
There is a book on the desk.
机の上に本があります。
There are two bikes in front of the building.
建物の前に自転車が2台あります。
⚠️ 物や人が1つ・1人なら is、2つ以上・複数なら are を使います。
There is と There are の使い分け
単数・数えられない名詞は There is
There is a girl in the park.
公園に女の子が1人います。
There is a lot of water in the lake.
湖にはたくさんの水があります。
water や money のように数えられない名詞は、量が多くても単数扱いです。
複数は There are
There are some books in my bag.
私のかばんの中に何冊か本があります。
There are many students in the library.
図書館にはたくさんの生徒がいます。
💡 1つ・1人なら There is、2つ以上なら There are と覚えましょう。
場所を表す語
存在する場所は、on（〜の上）、in（〜の中）、under（〜の下）、near（〜の近く） などの前置詞と一緒に表します。
There is a cat under the table.
テーブルの下に猫がいます。
There was an old shrine in the village.
その村には古い神社がありました。
There is / There are の疑問文
疑問文では、is / are を文の先頭に出します。
Is there a computer on the desk?
机の上にコンピューターがありますか。
答えは、Yes, there is. または No, there isn’t. です。
Are there any children in the room?
部屋に子どもたちはいますか。
Yes, there are. / No, there aren’t.
🟨 疑問文は Is there ～? または Are there ～? の形にします。
There is / There are の否定文
否定文では、is / are の後ろに not を置きます。
There isn’t a school in the town.
その町には学校がありません。
There aren’t any animals in that forest.
あの森には動物がまったくいません。
⚠️ 複数の否定文では、There aren’t any ～ のように any を使うことが多いです。
There is / There are と have の違い
There is / There are は場所に何が存在するかに焦点を置きます。一方、have は人や物が何を持っているかを表します。
There are seven days in a week.
1週間には7日あります。
A week has seven days.
1週間は7日あります。
このように、意味が近い文へ書き換えられる場合があります。

There is は単数・数えられない名詞、There are は複数名詞に使います。疑問文では is / are を前に出し、否定文では not を続けます。
